Despite its size and the fierce competition, Skytech, holds a widely known position of prominence and importance in today's complex and competitive scenario of satellite communications.

Skytech's strength is based on its constant adherence to the highest technological standards and innovative transmission methods developed by leading satellite operators, whom Skytech works with in close synergy. This collaboration sees confirmation in the qualifications and certifications Skytech regularly obtains, often for being the first in the world to provide compliant terminals that operate with their latest satellites.

In response to the increasingly strong demand, and growing needs for broadband and ultra-broadband services, Skytech has released a range of high-performance VSAT equipment with highly advanced features, ranging up to Ka band, where Skytech has already operated successfully for a number of years: terminals that are unmatched in terms of gain, tracking power and unfaltering connectivity, even under the most severe environmental conditions. These features, characterised by high-performance transmission bandwidth, extreme robustness and hardiness, lightweight and user-friendliness, are yet to be matched by competitors.

Skytech reckons this is not enough to keep its leadership and its ownership and management are committed to continue to invest in experimental research: Skytech's team strives to push pioneering research to the extreme bands of the electromagnetic spectrum, working closely with associated organisations and agencies in this field. It collaborates with institutions and academia for the use of the Q/V/W bands, which are destined to become the cornerstone of “super-broadband on the move" communications of the future, like the next generation of MEO/LEO satellites.

The result of this synthesis between technology, research, engineering, passion and expertise can be found in this family of multi-band Ku/Ka and X/Ku/Ka terminals: incredibly light and compact, unsurpassed in satellite tracking, in spite of shock, vibration and oscillation; characterised by the use of high-end construction materials and technologies such as carbon, titanium, and metal alloys from the aeronautical industry for motor structure, dish targeting, RF payload and illuminators.

The achievement of these objectives can hardly have come about without disciplinary conceptual activities, aimed at identifying the best possible technological solutions, with no compromises or half-measures whatsoever. To provide some examples of what is meant by this, Skytech made extensive use of the most modern and sophisticated simulation systems and design analysis, constantly optimisation research, accurate performance assessments, and continuous feedback with users’ most critical and demanding operational requirements. These elements have formed the cornerstones of such R&D path, becoming the key of Skytech's success, which can be attributed to eight pillars:

  1. Up to 3 bands integrated multi-band technology (X/ Ku/Ka civil and military Q/V and W) with RF operating efficiency greater than or equal to the more famous and renowned mono-band terminals on the market;
  2. Compactness, lightness, strength and silent operational functioning thanks to the widespread use of structural carbon, together with titanium and alloys for aeronautical use, powered by brushless actuators, smartly coupled to the mechanical elements;
  3. S/W of tracking and control, which operates in self-learning mode on each platform's kinematic characteristics, thus adapting to the specificity of the single operating condition without the need for external reference sources to navigation;
  4. Miniaturisation of the overall RF payload - antenna, which allows to integrate the modem inside the radome reducing its size and minimising RF losses due to wiring: no external control unit is required nor any rack cabinets designed to contain it, reducing both the impact with the platform and the laying of cables inside. In this way it compresses both the commissioning times between technicians on board and the system installation;
  5. Complete remote-control of the terminal's functions, with unmatched levels of assistance provided by the dedicated Network Centre at head office, allowing automated collection, information regarding the terminal's status in the form of compressed telemetry data. This enables, even in case of total failure, full knowledge of the determinant causes, significantly accelerating service restoration. This approach, is currently unrivalled by competitor’s solutions, while it is evident how remote management enables software and firmware updates that may be needed and/or available during the terminal’s life-span, to the benefit of the system’s highest MTBF;
  6. To allow each system to automatically determine RF shadows independently, generated by the kinematic motion of the naval platform on which it is installed; in the case of dual coupling to other antenna, otherwise positioned on board. The service switching occurs automatically, exchanging both traffic and satellite link, without the use of additional devices or manual intervention, even with downlink rates that would imperceptible to the user;
  7. Enabling the antenna commissioning in ultra short times, also allowing customers to quickly and easily reposition terminals whenever necessary. This need is not uncommon, as we have noticed from our experience in the oil and gas industry and Yachting;
  8. Service provision integrated with hardware. Airtime bundled with modem and antenna in a single support centre managing a six year extended guarantee contract.

For over thirty years the professionals working in Skytech have shared the passion, the strong determination and ambition of its founder. Given the common ground that formed between semantic similarities, with the rise of a spontaneous attraction, and easily recognisable common values, Skytech is now joining an even more daring entrepreneurial group comprising of 500 staff: the IDS Ingegneria Dei Sistemi.

IDS Ingegneria Dei Sistemi was also founded in Italy, consisting predominantly of electronic and telecommunication engineers, computer scientists with a vocation in the field of simulation and electromagnetic measuring at extreme frequencies. IDS boasts a history of over 30 years of excellence in the electronics industry, radio measurements, electromagnetic compatibility, in radar reflectance measurements and RCS, as well as in the design and manufacturing of radar technology, satellite and drones, with renowned and established relationships with major national and international companies, even in the defence sector.

Skytech is proud today to unite its skills with such an established international company in order to give life to a new division, extremely focused on the technology of satellite terminals, able to distinguish itself more and more, in this ever-changing industry.

QV-LIFT project Since November 1st 2016, Skytech is partner of ambitious project funded by the European Community in the framework of Horizon 2020. The QV-LIFT project, by means of a consortium led by the Italian Space Agency (ASI), aims at developing the foundation of the Ground Segment Technology for the future Q/V band Terabit SatCom systems. In this contest, Skytech is developing the pointing systems which will guarantee the accurate satellite tracking of an airborne terminal and of a transportable earth station.
